About Monero

Monero (XMR) is an open-source, decentralized cryptocurrency designed to provide private and censorship-resistant digital payments.

Unlike transparent blockchain networks, Monero protects transaction information by default. Ring signatures obscure the sender, stealth addresses protect the recipient, and Ring Confidential Transactions hide the transferred amount. These protections are applied across the network rather than offered as an optional privacy mode.

Monero uses the RandomX Proof-of-Work algorithm, which is optimized for general-purpose CPUs and designed to reduce the advantage of specialized mining hardware. A new block is produced approximately every two minutes.

The project launched on 18 April 2014 without a premine, ICO or presale. After completing its main emission, Monero entered a permanent tail-emission phase that creates 0.6 XMR per block. This means that XMR does not have a fixed maximum supply, while its percentage inflation gradually declines over time.

Monero is developed by a global community of open-source contributors rather than a conventional company. Its ecosystem includes official GUI and command-line wallets, research groups, developer documentation, mining tools and community-operated infrastructure.

Monero permanently issues 0.6 XMR approximately every two minutes, preserving a continuing block reward for miners after the main emission.

Monero is maintained through public repositories, community workgroups and ongoing research rather than being controlled by a conventional blockchain company.

Monero provides strong on-chain privacy protections, but it does not guarantee complete anonymity in every situation.

Privacy may be reduced if a user reveals identifying information, exposes wallet keys, uses a compromised device, connects through an untrusted remote node, or fails to protect network metadata. Users should verify wallet downloads and understand the privacy implications of their chosen wallet, node and network configuration.

Monero is community-developed and has no centralized customer-support organisation. Users are responsible for securing their wallet seed, verifying software and researching applicable legal or service restrictions in their jurisdiction.
